The neighbourhood
Design District
Zona Tortona, where every April Milan becomes the design capital of the world.
The Salone del Mobile
The Salone del Mobile was born in 1961, when a group of furniture makers from Brianza decided to show their pieces at an all-Italian fair. The first edition had just over three hundred exhibitors; today the Salone draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year and is the industry’s most important event.
The Fuorisalone
In the 1980s companies and designers began organising events outside the fair pavilions, in the city’s showrooms and courtyards. That is how the Fuorisalone was born: for one week, Milan Design Week, the whole city turns into an open-air exhibition of installations, launches and parties.
Zona Tortona
The heart of the Fuorisalone is Zona Tortona, between Via Tortona and Via Savona. Here, in the former factories behind Porta Genova station, architecture studios, photographers, agencies and showrooms have settled since the 1990s. Superstudio, the MUDEC (Museum of Cultures) and the Armani Foundation were all born in these spaces.
Sleeping in the district
Our apartments in Via Savona 69A, Via Tortona 18 and Via Voghera 9A are inside the district: during Design Week you walk from one event to the next, and for the rest of the year the neighbourhood remains one of Milan’s most creative, with bars, galleries and the Darsena ten minutes away.
